Alkaline Hydrolysis

What is Alkaline Hydrolysis?

Alkaline hydrolysis, often called aquamation, is a water-based alternative to flame cremation. The process uses water, gentle heat, and natural alkalinity to accelerate the body’s natural return to its elemental form.

Sometimes referred to as “water cremation,” aquamation mirrors the natural decomposition process, but in a carefully controlled and respectful setting. The result is a set of mineral remains (similar to cremated remains) that can be placed in an urn, buried, or scattered.

Many families are drawn to alkaline hydrolysis because it offers a softer, more environmentally mindful approach while maintaining dignity and reverence throughout the process.

Why Families Choose Alkaline Hydrolysis

Lower Environmental Impact

Alkaline hydrolysis is recognized for its reduced environmental impact, lowering carbon emissions, consuming less energy, and operating without direct flame or airborne emissions.

A Gentle Alternative

Many families describe aquamation as a softer process because it uses water rather than flame.

Value Alignment

For those who value sustainability as part of their legacy, aquamation can feel like a natural extension of those beliefs.

Choosing the Right Urn for Alkaline Hydrolysis

Aquamation typically results in approximately 20–30% more ash remains than traditional flame cremation. Adult aquamation remains often require 220 cubic inches or more.

At Passages, we have select urns designed to accommodate aquamation remains while honoring environmental priorities.

A Thoughtful Choice

As funeral practices continue to evolve, more families are seeking options that reflect their environmental values, spiritual beliefs, and personal preferences.
